Professional tennis is determined by tournaments that take place all over the world throughout the year. The year 1900 marks the birth of the David Cup, the most important competition for national men’s tennis teams. What was at that time only a competition between the USA and Great Britain, is today an annual global event with over 100 participating nations.

At the first Davis Cup at the beginning of the 20th century in Boston, the Americans surprised their opponents – at that time still the British Isles – with an unbeatable 3-0. A year earlier, four members of the Harvard University tennis team had developed the idea for the competition. The players wanted to challenge Great Britain, the motherland of tennis, in a competition. The tennis game, which is still known today, was created in July 1877 in Wimbledon, London.

Originally known as the "International Lawn Tennis Challenge", the tournament was soon renamed to the Davis Cup, inspired by the eye-catching winning trophy of one of its four initiators, Dwight Davis. By the way, the sister competition in women’s tennis is the Fed Cup.
