This is a must in Germany. No game is too complicated, too easy or too boring–- we love them all. But not only the Germans are absolute game fanatics. The British have even invented a special holiday in honour of games: the Games Day. When, why and how you can find out here.

What is the British Games Day all about?

In contrast to many other curious holidays that are known all over the world, the background of the British Games Day has been handed down in detail. For almost 40 years now, the British have been celebrating this day, which is dedicated to games, on 20 December. But what was the trigger for this passion, which culminates in a holiday of its own?

In August 1975, the British games manufacturer Games Workshop Limited spontaneously decided to create their own games fair: Games Day. However, this gaming convention could only take place because another event was cancelled at short notice. After some organisational difficulties due to the lack of preparation time, the fair finally took place at the end of December in London’s Seymor Hall.

Games Workshop Limited – founded in 1975 – had originally focused on the import of board and roleplaying games from the USA. The first so-called pen & paper role-playing game "Dungeons and Dragons", which still enjoys enormous popularity today, was imported by Games Workshop Limited for the first time throughout Europe. The company opened its first shop in 1978 – a truly magical place that was not just an ordinary shop, but a meeting place for players to exchange ideas and talk shop.

Since then Games Workshop Limited has specialised in the range and sale of miniatures for role-playing games – also known as "tabletop games" – and is listed on the London Stock Exchange.

An absolute success story that once started in a small apartment in London.

And why December 20 of all days?

Even the first Games Day was an absolute hit: almost 5,000 visitors found their way to the trade fair, which was organised at short notice. Until then there had been no comparable event in Great Britain for fans of role-playing and tabletop games. Only on Games Day could they indulge their passion, test the latest game creations and strengthen their community. Other events followed at other locations on different dates. But 20 December could finally establish itself as a fixed holiday. Now the event is held regularly at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.
