Human vs. machine: The first computer which beats a pro in poker

General October 1, 2018 11:05 am

Chess-players amongst us know: Winning against a computer is not possible. For some years this is also the case for Poker. In 2015, scientists from the Canadian University of Alberta created a software that even beats Poker players – if they play many times.

In 40 years, this program is the first to cope this challenge. What makes Poker so difficult is the so called imperfect information. In contrast to games like chess, not all the relevant information – like figures or cards – are visible for the players. That’s why it is very difficult for artificial intelligence to anticipate solutions for Poker games.

The Canadians’ artificial intelligence therefore is only able to cope with an easier version of Poker: Heads-up Limit Texas Hold’em. In this game for two, the deposits themselves are limited as well as their amounts, so less gaming situations are possible. Nevertheless 3.16×1017 – 315 quadrillions –, an extremely high number of games, can occur!

Still the computer isn’t completely invincible: Like its human counterpart, the computer is highly dependant on the cards in the game. But when the game is repeated often enough, which means luck is spreaded fairly, the computer really is invincible… That’s the result of a test with 60 billion games.
