Mathematician won 14 times in the lottery – completely legally
In 1992, the day of February 12 changed the life of a Romanian scientist while a lottery company in Virginia was getting suspicious. On this day Stefan Mandel won the jackpot of 27 million dollar – and got sued afterwards. But why?
The magic algorithm
Stefan Mandel was a mathematician and economist who spent years working on theoretical probabilities. He found an algorithm with which made him accurately predict five out of the six lotto winning numbers. This significantly increased his chance of winning the Jackpot – there were no longer millions of possible number combinations, instead only several thousands were left.
During the sixties he started small. Mandel bought together with several friends thousands of lottery tickets, with which he could cover all combinations. He won the main prize, paid off his friends and bribed foreign ministry officials to flee Romania with his family for a new life and a bigger Jackpot with the rest of the money.
A loophole for Stefan Mandel
While living abroad he optimized his strategy and started to try his luck with bigger lotteries. Nevertheless he wasn’t able to do this all by himself, he simply hadn’t enough money. So he worked together with several investors. They made it to win 12 times in the Australian lottery. He used the money of his investors to buy as many lottery tickets as his algorithm gave him possible combinations of the upcoming lottery numbers. It was worth it. The jackpot were much higher than the invested costs.
After the first few times Australia tightened up its law. A single person was not longer allowed to buy as many lottery tickets as he or she wants. So Mandel founded a company which only worked on buying and filling out lottery tickets. After the 12th jackpot the law has been changed again. Mandel had no longer the legal possibility to use his system.
27 million dollar and one lawsuit
Mandel moeved in the United States and was looking for a new jackpot. In Virginia he found the perfect match and he started all over. He founded the International Lotto Fund and collected more than nine million dollars from thousands of investors for his next coup. He had a dozen employees whose only work was to prepare all the lottery tickets.
Mandel was waiting for a real high jackpot. Then, one day, it was high enough. Within 72 hours about seven million tickets had to get submitted. They didn’t make it. Only five and half million lottery tickets made it to the lottery counter. But Mandel was a lucky one, the ticket with the winning combination has been handed in. He won 27 million dollar.
Three years later Mandel had to declare his bankrupt. His system was legal during the time he used it, but the lottery company of Virginia sued him for fraud. A long and expensive litigation followed.
