Sports betting in the NBA – Everything on Mr. Maverick

For the past 21 years, Dirk Nowitzki alias Mr. Maverick has been a 213 centimeter pillar of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The German giant is one of the strongest scorers in NBA history. He is a 14-time all-star – an award for outstanding performance during a season. He also scored a total of 31,560 points during his career. This score is the sixth best mark of all time. Looking at these successes, one thing becomes clear to everyone: he can score points. So, in a Nowitzki Game, it’s no surprise when it comes to the “point bet” – which player scores the most points – that the favourite scorer is the German giant.

But times change. The Nowitzki era is over. But the incentive for sports betting is far from getting retired. The excitement of this competition has been caused more by the league itself, then by Mr. Maverick. So there are 30 teams, who are divided into two “Conferences” and they are separated in three “Divisions” each. The groups compete against each other. Because a promotion or relegation is not possible, every team has a chance to win. Conversely, the performance differences are enormous, in the 82 matches that each team has to play. What does this mean for you and your bet? Diverse odds, matches from October to April and surprising results. For instance: 2011, the Mavericks were considered as outsiders. But in the end they won the championship. Nowitzki is probably one centimeter taller after this victory.

But of course the victory of an underdog is not that common. That’s why the so-called “Victory bet” – as usual in classic football – is a rarity. Because the stronger team is often identified from the start. It’s more common in this game to use “Spread bets”. On the one hand the favorite team gets a negative value, for example -10.5. The underdog, on the other hand, gets a positive value. At the end the bookmaker calculates this odds with the final score of the match. In this example, the winning team must win with a margin of 11 points so that the spread bet is a win.

But you don’t have to worry about a possible draw: basketball doesn’t have that. It is extended until a team is in the lead. The longest professional basketball game in 1951 had six extensions and lasted 78 minutes. Despite the extensions, the result was not exactly high. If you had played in the so-called “Over/under-extension bet”, would you have guessed the point score of 75 to 73? Neither do we.
