5th place: An absurd acquittal
In 2004, three men made 1.2 million GBP on only one evening in the London Ritz casino. They analysed the speed of the roulette wheel trhough special lasers. So they could predict the results accurately. The most insane part of this story is the end: The men got caught, but were acquitted. They even were allowed to keep the money. The reason: They didn’t influence the game process actively.
4th place: With infrared contact lenses to millions of dollars
This casino scam sounds like a Hollywood movie, but it really happened in 2011: Two employees of a Casino in Cannes, France, marked blackjack cards with a special liquid. It could only be seen by their accomplice, who was wearing infrared contact lenses. When he left the casino with 70.000 Euros, the police took notice of him. They put a trace on his telephone and found out the lucrative tactic. Two months later he was sent to jail for two years.
3rd place: An aborted scam and burning socks
Two physics students of the University of California developed mini computers to predict the result of roulette wheels. But when they tried to use them it ended in a catastrophe: Due to a short-circuit, the computers in the students’ shoes caused electrical shocks and their socks went up in flames. They got caught immediately.
2nd place: A self-paid severance package
Bill Brennans’ theft is unbelievable and its simplicity is hard to beat: He was a longtime employee at the Stardust casino in Las Vegas. In 1992, he left the casino with 500,000 US dollars. As everyday, he said goodbye to the security staff, but no one realized the vast amounts of cash and poker chips, he carried with him. They never caught him and he is still one of the most wanted persons in the United States.
1st place: The biggest card counting club ever
The risky casino scams of the MIT Blackjack team continued for the record time of 14 years: From 1979 until 1993, they built the biggest card counting ring that ever existed.
