Welcome everybody to the annual Six Nations Championship!

As the name suggests, welcome to the rugby competition between the nations of the British Isles and France and Italy! What is this odd competition of only six nations we here you ask? Well, dear reader, it is an annual rugby contests that started out in 1883 between the nations of the British Isles: England Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. They later expanded with the addition of France in 1910 and Italy with the turn of the millennium. The tournament is the oldest international rugby competition with 2020 marking the 21st Six Nations Championship. Only the 21st as they changed the name of the competition from Five Nations Championship to Six.
How does this differ from the World Cup?
The tournament format is simple. It works in a round-robin style of five rounds. Each nation faces each other once and the team with most points wins! Each win awards 4 points, a draw 2. Oh, you think that’s as simple as that? No. Teams can earn bonus points by either scoring four or more tries (1 bonus point) or losing a game by fewer than or equal to seven points (1 bonus point). You can technically get both bonus points. There is also a possibility of earning 3 additional points by winning every single game and earning the “Grand Slam” title.
We can hear you thinking, what if the teams finish on equal points? Well there are two tiebreakers that go in this order. 1. Point difference. Meaning the team that had scored more and conceded less would win. However, if they are tied on that statistic then, 2. The team that has scored more tries wins the tiebreaker. Theoretically, of course, you can still tie which means the title is shared! A very unique twist in the world of sports for sure!
So… What’s going on?
As of 2019, Wales leads the charge with most titles at 39 victories which are split 27 ‘outright’ and 12 shared with England trailing by one at 38. However, England has won more outright victories at 28.
Turning our attention to this year’s games, we are into the 3rd round. With France and Ireland leading the charge at two wins out of two games each. Both sitting at 9 points followed by Wales and England at 5, Scotland at 2, and Italy 0.
Next up we have round 3 played on February 22nd and 23rd. Starting with the battle of the bottom: Italy vs. Scotland. Followed by Wales and France, and the next day England versus Ireland. Depending on how the games play out, seeing the current standings there will be two massive dates to look forward to and that is Round 4’s England versus Wales game on the 7th of March and Round 5’s France versus Ireland. These will look to be the most interesting ties as the France and Ireland, given a successful Round 3 and 4 (although unlikely, still possible), will be battling out for the Grand Slam and overall first place. While anything but victories will see either England or Wales gain the opportunity to catch up and potentially steal the title away. If both England and Wales win their round 3 games, which are against Ireland and France, respectively, they will be duking it out for the top spot.
